I didn't know that I might have broken this thread by disagreeing with someone. If so, am sorry and would like to make it up by recommending a excellent book/movie combo. I heard Daniele mention “War by Sebastian Junger” on one of the podcasts so I tracked it down. I was happy to find out that the book is paired with a documentary called “Restrepo” released in 2010. Together they provide an excellent perspective on war and some of the mental and physical tolls that combat takes on soldiers. War by Sebastian Junger - 9.0/10 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005K6SO0C Restrepo - 8.0/10 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1559549/ |

I recently watched this documentary about the great sushi master Jiro. I expected this to be just an exploration of the sushi restaurant culture. But it was more about a man's endless pursuit of perfection. Jiro has great presence and command of the room which makes the movie even more enjoyable. Rating: 9/10 - Great movie. I would recommend to anyone. |

Synecdoche, New York This is a brilliant and deep film. It's surreal and abstract and so well-written. I had to watch it twice in a row. It's one of those movies like Fight Club where you catch little clues you missed the first time. I cried the second time. It touches on some heavy life shit like mortality and consciousness in a very metaphorical but visual way. It's like a 2 hour mushroom trip that gets trippier and trippier. It's from Charlie Kaufman, the screenwriter of “Being John Malkovich” and “Eternal Sunshine…” 10/10 |

Looper - 8/10 (But I will readily admit I am not that discerning… Great plot, although some may have issues, questions, and/or doubts regarding the time travel part of the storyline. Just a cool-ass action flick. |

This documentary made my heart hurt and also inspired jealousy of the man suffering from amnesia. In essence his amnesia is the ultimate “reset button”- for consequences good and ill. I came away with the conclusion he's one of the luckiest people on the planet. 8/10 |

Jason That is a solid movie. You should check out the doc about the story of what it is loosely based on, Incident at Oglala. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104504/ Watched it a few weeks back. 7/10 I would recommend Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai. Super raw, great watch. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1728196/ 9/10 |
