Audible audiobook recommendations?

Hello fellow TDT forum folk! Looks like we already have active threads on books and movies, I thought maybe we could have a separate one for audiobooks. After all, the reading performance can often add to (or subtract from) the experience, elevating a good book to greatness or sometimes making you think “I wish I'd just bought the text version instead”. In that latter category, I would have to put The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. I guess it's supposed to be a sci-fi classic but I just find it hard to follow in audio format. Or maybe the book gets going slowly? Either way, it's the only audiobook that has kind of been left hanging in my Audible app and I wish I'd just gotten the e-book instead. In the opposite category, meaning greatness, I'd especially put The Martian by Andy Weir. A great story that works extremely well in audio format because the majority of it is audio log entries by a lone astronaut on Mars. The guy who reads it does an absolutely brilliant job. Check it out. The Ender books are also exceptionally good on Audible because they're recorded with a huge cast. Just makes it a more “theatrical” experience if you will. I've only listened to Ender's Shadow from Audible so far though. I'd be curious to hear your recommendations. And in spite of what the above book references might suggest, I'm not really a big scifi aficionado or anything, it just happens to be the genre I was hanging out in for the past month or two. So books of any genre will do. Fiction or nonfiction. All good. |

If you're going for the ‘theatrical experiance’ the best option is Graphic Audio. Full cast audiobooks, awesome voice actors, and excellent sound design. They don't have anywhere near the same number of books that audible does, but I'm assuming that's because they take the time to do audiobooks right. That said here's a few of my favorites from audible. Use of Weapons by Ian M Banks March Upcountry by John Ringo and David Weber Hyperion by Dan Simmons Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Man's War by John Scalzi Snowcrash by Neil Stephenson |
