First time poster but long time listener (as most probably say). Seeing that there was not a thread on this post yet, I couldn't let that stand so ill start Daniele can have a great conversation with anyone with half a brain I think but to get these two great minds together, with their different opinions and worldviews, together on this podcast was a real treat. I have read 2 of Robert Greene s books (33 strategies and Mastery) and was so stoked when I saw that daniele and rich were having him on the podcast and boy did they not disappoint. Cover alot of ground but, like most times, had my full attention the whole time. So interested by both their perspectives on life and perseverance and just wanted to say to all that listen will not be disappointed and that we can all learn something if we just shut our own opinions down, if but for a short while, and take some of these lessons on board. Congrats on getting such a great author on and on producing an amazing 1 1/2 hrs of entertainment. Keep em coming guys! “We all wear masks in the social arena, playing different roles to suit the different environments we pass through” |

I agree that it was a great interview. I think there are additional options in regards to maintaining “control” over a situation or encounter than those which Mr. Greene highlights but he certainly does an excellent job of going over the common, simple power plays which one can expect. I do not, so much , enjoy the tongue in cheek or that he energizes (and is part of) this growing community of professional manipulators. Ok , yes we are all and have always been manipulative but something about you tube videos on how to get a girl into bed (not start a relationship with someone , just use them and throw them away) is extremely distasteful and any pick-up artist can make an argument similar to Greene's . They can (and do) easily claim that they just put it out there and like any tool, it can be used in a creative or destructive manner. Yet behind this cynical claim is an army of misogynistic values, in the same way which PUA's objectify women it is hard to read a manual on how to get over on people without stimulating the machievellian part of my mind which I , personally, do not enjoy. I like games but not one's with high emotional investment where the stakes are not even hinted at. My views on this are both uneducated and unproven, I have no idea what sort of impact pick up artists or Mr. Greene's work has on people. I am open to it being a positive one, I am also open to being completely incorrect in my characterization. I am only describing a feeling, not trying at a logical argument. My only conclusion is that such endeavor's are very disturbing to me because we write our own narrative's. There simply is no such thing as “this is the way things are” that is just a cop out. We create our world and have a lot of influence on many people. Surely I have used his tactics without knowing it so I make no claim of moral superiority only that the narrative that we are all out to get best advantage over one another is one way of looking at things. I thought theories like “game theory” and recent research actually denotes a lot of cooperation, in which case you may be leveraging power over someone who is handing you a bucket to put your house fire out. That may lead to greater personal gain but simple gratitude would do in those situations. I would hate to live in a world where I am playing chess with personal relations and am very happy that either, I already played all these games well or do not have to at all and can still be as successful as I want. Just disturbed by any objectification of “others” doesn't jive with my outlook but this is just my humble and uneducated opinion, I am very open to hearing why works like Mr. Greene's are beneficial to humanity. |
