A quick point about "our true purpose" in life. The earth worm doesn't know....

Just listened to a podcast about purpose and meaning of life and figuring “it” out. I just wanted to throw a perspective out there that hasnt really been given much thought. The lowly earth worm is a very simple life form. It instinctively eats in the dirt and procreates. It has no idea that its dung/earth worm castings are among the most nutritious plant foods. It has no idea that it increases the quality of the soil. It has no idea that by burrowing around in the soil, the roots get more air and also can grow better in loosened dirt. It has no idea that forests 100s of million hectares are dependent on their simple act of digging, eating dirt, and procreating. It has no idea that these forests enrich all other life forms in some way. So basically the conclusion Im trying to make is: The lowly earth worm has a very important purpose that it doesnt understand. I think this same principle applies to all other living things, including humans. As smart as we are, as aware as we are, our understanding of things is a pin prick in an ocean of infinity in all directions. Not just infinity in this direction and that direction, but also on a micro scale and macro scale. We used to think that atoms were the smallest building block, then it was protons and neutrons, then electrons, then quarks, then the higgs boson (god particle), and its only a matter of time before something is smaller than that. It will be infinite even in the micro scale. The more questions we answer the more questions we have. So to think that we can ever figure out our “purpose” in the “grand scheme of things” is futile because like the earth worm, we dont know what we dont know and we are limited by our vessel and thinking capacity. Its funny, how I come from a science background which is typically left brain function. However the older I get the more I accept that life is very much a feeling out process. Dare I say that we are aligned with our true purpose when we are at our most fulfilled/happiest state even if we have absolutely no clue (like the earth worm) what that purpose could be? We can be nothing more than fingertips of a master awareness poking through a veil entertaining itself and/or just trying to figure out whats on the other side. Each finger tip has a false sense of identity and ego. And when we die we fall back to the collective awareness. |
