So I was going to comment on a previous music thread, but I have too many bands that deserve endless praise. In an effort to stay focused I will pick one at a time to elaborate on. My choosing Wookiefoot as the first to focus on is a very conscious one. The importance of making each show as special as possible is something Wookiefoot has expressed, and every fan in attendance has felt. Im almost feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of sharing all the memories and emotions this band has created and elicited in me. Clearly I will not be able to tell all, and that is where my angst lies, I hope to accurately convey greatness without sounding like a fanboy. First, let me explain the occasion in which I remember Wookiefoot voicing their concern over producing their very best each and every time. Its a memory I'm very fond of & was the catalyst to my years of following them. Of course I am foggy on the year, but it was at a 10000 lakes festival (a once great 4 day music bash, before Dave Matthews bankrupted it). Wookiefoot had a main stage spot the year this memory resides in, but it was a day slot, & this is a band that knows how to make the lighting a part of the experience. So prior to the music, an apology is put forth by the band, expressing how the typical night time show will not be possible, but promising that every effort will be made to produce a show equal to it. It was that, and more, a constant parade of costumes and antics in succession with the music! I remember being in awe of how much there was to follow, and from start to finish the exuberance of everyone on stage was wholly apparent. It was only my second time seeing them, and no future concert of theirs I attended ever lacked that feeling of caring. What's more, I was soon to be welcomed home. For anyone reading that has been to Harmony Park my last sentence is a clue enough to my next major Wookiefoot experience. Harmony Park, or “Home” to many who have been there, is where I was first realized I had an entire family I had yet to meet. They all start as strangers, but a simple smile & greeting of “welcome home” turns any one of them into a first cousin. A warm hello, helping hand, good conversation, and even a hug is available around every corner. My very first time at Harmony was the first festival I went to in which you park your car and haul your gear into the camping area. So naturally I grabbed far more then I ever should have, and made my way into the unknown. After almost a full lap of the camp site a panic started to seep in, it looked as if there was no where to set up tents. My friend and I by this time were awash in sweat, just as we set our stuff down to rest a friendly group approaches and offers us some help. They tell us where open camping can still be found, on top of that, they insist on carrying our gear to that location with us! One double rainbow later (not a euphemism) I was convinced the place was magic. This festival has had its share of names throughout the years, my first one was when it was called Harvest Fest, & it currently goes by Shangri la. I know my focus is on Wookiefoot, but its worth mentioning that the numerous Wookiefoot festivals to follow also introduced me to a majority of the other bands I have come to love. Skipping past tons of fun details on those many great occasions, and not doing any justice to those spectacles on display at each of them, I get to the most powerful experience I have yet to feel with the Wookiefoot family. Project Earth 2014 Just the second music event I have brought my daughter to, first being a Wailers concert when she was three and a half. She had just turned 8 when we went to Project Earth. I'm sure it was because she was with me, but this magical place that I had been to so often, was being seen in an entirely new light. I could enjoy myself, but I also got a whole new glimpse of the wonder and excitement through the eyes of my daughter. This festival is geared more towards the uniting of the family, and it really felt like an additional welcoming to all the little ones. After about three hours, day 1, my daughter said to me; “Daddy, I can't wait to come back next year!”. That's my girl I was even able to bribe her into getting on stage to dance the first night! (She can be shy) This festival is special in another regard, Wookiefoot takes NO pay for this event, and all profits go to the “Be The Change” charity. Something so in character with what is normal for Wookiefoot, it took someone outside of the band to make me aware of that kindness, something they felt no need to advertise. I'm glad someone else did! It warmed my heart. The most touching part of all was when Nahko told a story of a boy who asked for the money that would be spent on him, for his birthday, to go instead to the “Be The Change” charity. My eyes were very blurry by the time that little man took the stage. My lasting impression of that festival will be of the look on their parents faces, when Wookiefoot members brought their parents on stage for a song. The look of love & pride that was beaming, brighter than the lights, was surreal & had me bounding back to my tent to hug my baby girl! My most recent Wookiefoot experience was celebrating Halloween (always special with Wookie) & ringing in the New Year. Both were full of new friends being made for a night, but Halloween really blew me away. The energy was palpable, I bounced around talking super heros, clowns, and Egyptian gods(becoming increasingly more common) between sets. The craziest part by far though was a dance/song/magic trick/fight with dragon done right in front of me on stage. Quick context, beautiful woman dancing to song disappears behind curtain (freaked me out for 2.5 seconds) and then her shadow battles a dragon, successfully! Found a clip of it on YouTube, but the angle doesn't do it the justice I witnessed. Wookiefoot Halloween at The Cabooze 2014 I didn't detail songs for a reason, I think everyone makes of them what they will. I like interpreting what I hear in my own way, but I can say confidently, you will never lack for substance in a Wookiefoot song. Plenty of lyrics to live by, and words to contemplate. The feeling of leaving something out is stronger now than ever before, so I guess that means I'm done. Check them out! And join the family whenever possible |
