Royler Gracie vs. Eddie Bravo II is happening at Metamoris 3. This match is all kinds of intriguing. The first match about 10 years ago, was a major victory for the young Bravo, and a massive reality check for Royer. You can see the absolute anger in Royler's eyes after the defeat, and the sheer joy in Eddie's face as tears flowed freely. I train Jiu Jitsu, Royler is my Grandmaster. And I love Jiu Jitsu. I'm a little turned off by a couple of things, the dogmatic dismissal of all things 10th Planet, as well as the need of every mother fucking jiu jitsu guy to rename jiu jitsu as his invention, Gracie JJ for example. It's just jiu jitsu in my eyes. Royler fucked up the first match imo, not to say Eddie's victory wasn't earned, it was, but Royler turned his back on the principles Helio invented, and tried to muscle his way to victory. Which is not what jiu jitsu is about. And by far the most offending thing since the rematch is writing off Bravo's victory as “got lucky”… da fuck? How totally disrespectful. This sort of ego tripping goes against the idea of martial arts. I'm going to give Rolyer props for a couple of things, 1) taking this fight at 50. 2) taking this fight no-gi, when he's a gi guy. Totally excited to see this rematch. I hope that it will lead to a more inclusive jiu jitsu philosophy. |

Pretty cool - I would love to see Eddie win again, because a)Eddie is good people and b) it would disintegrate some orthodoxy which is always good. Anything that makes BJJ guys more open etc is a good thing. I think Eddie really is closer to the underlying ‘soul’ or foundations of jiujitsu than Royler - even if he is closer to it's roots genetically. |

yeah, totally stoked. Bravo might be a good idea for a guest on The Drunken Taoist. Danielle has talked about this on the podcast a little bit, as to why he trains MMA vs. a martial art, the idea being that it is what works. And not some traditional dogma martial art, like kung fu. |

My first thought is that there is no such thing as lucky in a competition scenario. It would be one thing if he caught him rolling around in class one day. If you aren't on your toes at a high level competition, then you fucked up. Or you are on your toes and he still choked you. I train under the Gracie Barra name and am proud of it, and in a way I think this is such a good thing for jiu jitsu because everyone just thought twice about leaving an arm in. Happy training.
Don't worry…everything's gonna be alright
