Hoover was totally insane. This isn't news from some conspiracy site, this from the government's own website archive.gov and what you're about to read is chilling.

J. Edgar Hoover, the founder of the FBI, had a personal hatred for Martin Luther King Jr. He was spying on King and collecting evidence of his extra-marital affairs. He gave a speech in November 1964 calling MLK the “most notorious liar” in the country. It is believed Hoover may have directed a package to King with recordings of his affairs and a letter telling him to commit suicide. This was all done under the auspices of “the threat of communism” during the Cold War. Of course MLK's assassin later said he was part of a conspiracy. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
This action was part of the COINTELPRO program from the 60's and 70's which targeted political dissidents.
People always tell you that “spooks” exist, but my guess is that if you find out first hand they exist, you're probably fucked.
The question you have to wonder is, does any program like COINTELPRO still exist today? Are political “dissidents” being harassed and told to kill themselves still? If you look at a lot of the stories about “left-wing” groups like OWS being infiltrated with “agent provocateurs” starting riots at peaceful protests it gets you wondering…what exactly goes on today and for what purpose? If the legacy of Hoover is still alive, is it like something out of Shirley Jackson's short story The Lottery?
