Psychology of Daily Puzzle Habit Formation and the Causes of Streaks

Hundred millions of people perform the same simple act every day for free. No reminders, no coercion, no subscriptions, no penalties in case of discontinuation. And yet, the habit persists for months and even years.

It is rather unusual and deserves consideration since the processes involved are similar to the processes leading to the formation of bad habits.

Habit formation and maintenance: a brief description

In terms of behaviour psychology, a habit is a loop consisting of three stages. First, there is the cue initiating the routine that ends in the reward. Thus, the association between the cue and the routine is formed.

It is easy to see why daily puzzles are very well suited to this pattern which explains why they became a habit so quickly compared to any other activities people try to form in themselves.
The role of the cue is extremely important in keeping this habit since it is often overlooked. People did not choose the puzzles. They simply performed several puzzles every day and the time became a cue. This is why the habit persists regardless of changes in enthusiasm - you do not make a choice of solving the puzzle anymore, the coffee does that for you.

The role of a small reward in motivation creation

Solving a word with five letters is a minor achievement. It has no value, does not impress anybody. But it still gives satisfaction. And we have to explain this.

Completion of an activity is always rewarding. Human mind focuses more on incomplete tasks. Their completion gives a minor but satisfying sense of closure regardless of the nature of the task. A puzzle is a simple task completed in four minutes and such a combination is highly efficient.

Variability of difficulty level is also important in this process. Sometimes you manage to guess a word in two tries, sometimes you use up all six attempts. Such a variability resembles the slot machine's attraction mechanism but much less aggressive and harmful. A puzzle with the constant difficulty will interest the player for only two weeks.

And this is a perfect difficulty level. It is difficult enough to attract the attention but not too difficult to make the player fail most of the time. Such activities provide the feeling of absorption that is the true reward. And the word is just a by-product.

Additional features and the price paid for them

The streak counter is an additional element of the loop and becomes the most efficient and the most dangerous part of it.

The efficiency of it is based on the effect of loss aversion. The losses affect people twice as strongly as equivalent gains and, therefore, the threat of losing the counter provides twice the motivational power than its increase. Two hundred days of work are lost in one afternoon and the knowledge of this possibility forces the player to return to it every day.

The price is the discrepancy between the pressure and the pleasure. Day three hundred is the same as day three. Only the threat of losing it became greater. It makes the player perceive the ritual as an obligation instead of pleasure which was never the initial aim.

The role of the scarcity

One puzzle a day is not the restriction. It is the design decision and fulfills many psychological functions.

It maintains the cue. If you can play forty rounds, then this activity stops becoming associated with a specific time and this is exactly what turns it into an automatic action. And it prevents the satiation as you complete the task while your desire to do something else is not fulfilled yet, which stimulates the return of the player.

There is the price, too. One daily puzzle is not enough practice to learn the skills, turns an unlucky word into the waste of time and sets the same difficulty level for a six-year-old and crossword veteran.

The solution: separation of ritual and game

The right approach is to separate the ritual from the game.

Use the daily puzzle for its intended purpose: fixed cue, closed loop, moment of the day that belongs to you. And then go to play elsewhere without any stakes. Wordle Unlimited has the Daily mode and unlimited rounds, timed games, topic packs and live multiplayer in wordleunlimited.dev. And now the habit and the practice are separated.

The problem of improvement is solved as well. The skills come from repetition and thirty puzzles per month will not give them. Unlimited rounds provide an opportunity to experiment, make mistakes and gain the experience without any negative consequences.

Rational approach to counter

There is nothing wrong in using the psychological tricks for forming the habit. The question is whether the mechanism continues to serve its purpose.

If you play in the middle of the night, tired, guess safely all the time and are afraid of losing the counter rather than enjoying the successes, then the mechanism gained the control over the activity. Counter contains the consecutive days, not the skills and nobody cares what it says.

The loss of the counter is nothing important. The morning coffee will start the routine again, and this is what worked all the time.
