I like the Koan that Ikkyu put on there but obviously I have not deciphered it, you won't with a thinking mind.. A rather fascinating work produced by the noted zen master, Ikkyu Sojun who was active during the Muromachi period. Ikkyu was living during a turbulent but interesting moment in Japanese history. The court settled a long battle between Emperor Godaigo and his court and returned to the original court in Kyoto. The Muromachi shogunate was established and the golden pavillion was being built. Ikkyu Sojun gained prominence from his philosophical teachings and reviving the dilapidated monastery of Daitokuji in Murasakino, Kyoto. The work shown here is a known Zen koan of a mouse set on a bamboo piece which the calligraphy, Nezumi senntou ni irite, waza kiwamaru. The literal translation is, the mouse enters in the coin box and has already refined its skills. The koan's hidden meaning is when one has reached the apex then one has found enlightenment. The koan is from the work of the Chinese zen master, Kung tang during the shiming era.
Scroll has been remounted and restored.
Age: Muromachi Era 15th century.
