I saw ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ the other night and loved it. Bobby De Niro puts on a classic performance and Bradley Cooper did a stellar job of his character portrayal (inspired by the director's bipolar son). Silver Linings Playbook - 8/10 |

I just watched Zero Dark Thirty the other night. I went into it expecting a pro-American propaganda film glorifying the capture of Bin Laden, so I ended up watching it as such. One of the first things I noticed, it never shows the main character Maya interacting with any of the local Pakistani's, unless it's something like a check-point. In that case, she doesn't make eye contact and the tension is so strong, you feel like she's going to get raped any minute! Also, it just so happens that whenever a major character is out in public, there's a fifty-fifty chance a suicide bomber's going to go off. Another thing… the main character you follow is a girl who gets recruited out of high school. According to the screenwriter, she is “based on a real person, but she also represents the work of a lot of other women.” All the other major characters searching for Bin Laden are around their twenties to mid-thirties and have a vigilant work ethic. When they're working, they're all at a table reading through 485 scattered sheets of paper and connecting the dots. (It seems they're perpetuating that American notion of the Puritan work ethic that Daniele and Thaddeus were talking about!) Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd guess that chances are, old white dudes were behind nearly every decision in the capturing of Bin Laden… and I think the movie'd have a different tone if it was more accurate in that regard… It also essentially justified waterboarding… I mean, we interrogated people by torturing them, but we also ended up capturing Bin Laden. Glen Greenwald said it “presents torture as its CIA proponents and administrators see it: as a dirty, ugly business that is necessary to protect America.” Pretty good way of putting it. Overall I'd give a 3/10, but I'd still recommend a watch for the sake of reflecting on how it promotes American ideologies. It's also got some pretttty intense waterboarding scenes too! I didn't see those coming ohhh man!! |

Being John Malkovich - 7.5/10 Worth a watch, especially if you've sacrificed some of the sacred plant to Odin. Weird film but equally entertaining. Some funny moments and the premise raised some interesting questions through-out. |

Seen a few flicks at my awesome local second run theater over the past few weeks. The Hobbit (7/10) Great to be back in middle earth but Peter Jackson's need to overproduce every chase scene just makes the film drag. Plenty of cool stuff, but we don't need to see the boys run from orcs through the old mines for ten years. Silver Linings Playbook (9/10) When a ton of my male friends started telling me how much they loved this obvious rom com I was worried the Fluoride in the drinking water had finally been replaced with estrogen but after having a watch myself I have to agree. Not sure if it was De Niro's strangely familiar football superstitions, Bradley Cooper's standout performance or the fact that Jennifer Lawrence is as crazy as she is hot, but this thing works like gang busters!! Oz the Great and Powerful (8/10) I'm sure a lot of y'all will find this rated too high and yes Franco was a bit over the top but my man Sam Raimi does such a great job of respecting and honoring the original Wizard of Oz with tasty visuals that seem lifted from the original, what's not to love. From the black smoke boiling out of the witch's broom to the always scary flying monkeys and Winkey guards to the very cool final “wizard” sequence the feel of Oz has been more than replicated (though many shots look like the matte paintings are a few feet from the actors) it seems carefully and painstakingly recrafted. Oh did I mention Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and favotite new Oz babe the China Doll are all terific, go see it and have fun. A taste from last year: Cloud Atlas (8/10) Other than Life of Pi and Dark Night Rises, this was one of my favorites from last year. Lots of stories can make it hard to follow but the amazing range of worlds visited amongst a wild array of stunning backdrops is what cinema is all about and thats the true true. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=media&img=40251&id=cloudatlas.htm As for this summer, I have high hopes for the new Star Trek, but I still wish someone other that JJ would be doing the new Star Wars, no offense to Mr. Abrams but we need to spread it around a little, how about Brad Bird??? I have even higher hopes for Man of Steel, please, please don't suck on the epic suck level of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (and promptly bores the living shit out of everyone, I still don't think I've completely woken back up and that was like 5 years ago). I hear the early chatter is that it is great. Lastly, this August District 9's Neil Blomkamp returns with sci fi trippiness in Elysium. Matt Damon battles the 1%ers on their rich people only space station. WE are the 99%, so go see some good movies. |

Sanjuro - 7/10 Another Kurosawa great - and at only 96 minutes it won't take a whole day to get through, unlike seven samurai. |

Kumare-8.5/10 Great for somebody who is interested in spirituality, psychology, or just wants to see the people who joined what is essentially a cult set up by an Indian guy from New Jersey as a type of experiment.
Don't worry…everything's gonna be alright

edit: above post recommend it too! I just watched a documentary called Kumare, the basic idea is a guy decides to see how easy it is to be a guru after being disappointed with what he'd experienced. He sets up a whole persona based on this guru he creates: http://www.kumare.org/about/ and proceeds to make a documentary about his experiences as Kumare. It's an incredibly interesting documentary I don't feel like I can do it justice I'd really recommend it to anybody who listens to TDT. I don't give 10/10 often, but I loved this one. Trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXUzG6YKuvo Movie can be bought/ rented or what ever here: http://kumaremovie.com/ (if you decide to get it through amazon use the TDT link! ) |

WOW! Just watched Kumaré because of everyone's suggestion… DAMN man! That hit me HARD! Especially the ending! Hit me in the feels a lot more than I had expected! I have to say 10/10. Great movie to watch if in need of motivation, perfect reminder of the power of longterm goals and discipline. Amazing! |
